Get Grounded with a Root Chakra Meditation

Get Grounded with a Root Chakra Meditation

Your sense of physical and financial security comes from an open root chakra. The root chakra is the most physical of the chakras, meaning that it is fully grounded in the physical experience and not concerned with the spiritual experience (as is the crown chakra). It is the foundation on which the other chakras rest.

If you’re feeling unstable (financially, in relationships, your job, your home situation, etc.); if you’re uncomfortable around people and feel like some are out to get you; if you have persistent or recurring financial problems; if you worry a lot (especially about safety and your basic needs); if you feel unwelcome and nervous around people and your desires are highly materialistic, then your root chakra is blocked.

The root chakra is about grounding to the earth, like a foundation is the part of a house grounded to the earth. Of course we’re mobile, unlike a house, but the foundation represents stability and belonging (your house would slide downhill and no longer belong to the earth it was built on, without a solid foundation). Meditation helps you become aware of this connection and strengthen it.

Think about some common expressions that have to do with being grounded. Even the expression “being grounded” is a reference to the importance of having an open root chakra and being practical, responsible, and present-aware (in the moment). No matter what is going on, we remain centered, balanced and we have the self-mastery to avoid “reacting” blindly; instead, we “respond” rationally. “Getting on your feet” after a difficulty (regaining your equilibrium) and “losing ground” in the achievement of a goal speak volumes about having a strong physical, emotional and mental foundation. Being grounded is vital to your success and happiness. If you’re constantly struggling to make ends meet, it’s hard to be happy; so clearing your root chakra will help you improve your financial situation, take care of your basic needs and then you can breathe a sigh of relief, relax and be happy.

The best way to strengthen and support your root chakra on a daily basis is through physical activity. It really doesn’t matter which physical activity you choose – it could be anything from walking to dancing, team sports, individual sports, martial arts, yoga, and even things you might not consider as physical activity such as cleaning the house. For best results, don’t exercise to the point of exhausting or depleting yourself – you want physical movement to feel good, not draining.

If you’re a competitive athlete, you will have periods of intense regimented workouts but be sure that you have adequate recovery time, preferably “active recovery” such as walking so that your physical foundation doesn’t crumble (so you don’t end up depleted, overtrained and vulnerable to illnesses and injury).

Get grounded with a root chakra meditation.Ironically, even though it might seem that meditation is the opposite of physical activity, it is actually very healing for the root chakra because it is a grounding practice. Besides – you want balance in your life, and not be “going” all the time. Sometimes you need to just “be.”

Here’s a quick meditation you can do every day or whenever you feel like you need a more solid foundation.

Do this exercise outdoors and barefoot if possible (it’s not essential, but if you can, it’s a real delight).
Stand straight and relaxed, eyes ahead, shoulders and arms relaxed, feet shoulder width apart and a slight bend in your knees.
Slightly push your pelvis forward and sink into your knees a bit more.
Gently rock on your feet, very slightly forward and back until you find that “sweet spot” of perfect balance, weight evenly distributed over the soles of your feet.
Sink your weight downward. Feel the earth under your feet. If you’re barefoot, this is a great time to spread your toes and wriggle them in the dirt, sand or grass. It feels great!
Imagine a powerful energy flowing down through the soles of your feet into the earth, like roots spreading downward and outward from a tree. Imagine yourself looking for strength and support from Mother Earth.
Imagine energy flowing up from the earth into you through your “roots.” With each moment you are standing like this, more and more energy comes into you. Your “roots” grow stronger and more stable.
Hold this position for several minutes.
Then, sit gently on the ground, cross-legged, your hands resting on your thighs or if you like, in a mudra (hand position) where the dominant hand cradles the non-dominant hand (both palms facing upward), and the thumbs are lightly touching.
Meditation is a grounding practice.Chant the mantra “LAM” letting the “MM” sound linger; if you say it out loud, you will feel the resonance in your body. You can say it silently as well (the energy of the sound applies whether it’s said aloud or not) but it’s a mantra that feels very good in the body when said aloud. It’s very soothing!
Visualize a closed red flower such as a rose. Imagine that as you chant “LAM” the flower begins to open, petal by petal, until the flower is open and radiantly beautiful.
If you do this meditation every day (it only takes 5-10 minutes unless you choose to do it longer) you will find that your root chakra begins to open. This chakra is important as the foundation – it relates to your basic survival needs and your sense of belonging.

Also, wear the color red and eat red foods to strengthen your root chakra.

After you do this chakra meditation, you will feel more connected to the earth, to other people, and you will be more in touch with your higher self when it comes to making decisions that either support or harm your basic needs and sense of connection. You will find yourself making better financial and career decisions, and experience an upswing in your feeling of security.
